The Commonweal Foundation's Community Assistance Grants Committee will meet on May 22, 2008 to review February 1, 2008 proposals. Please check back on May 26th for award updates.
Welcome to the Commonweal Foundation's Community Assistance Grants Program. Please read the following information carefully to determine whether or not your program is aligned with our mission statement and meets all of the other criteria listed for the grant program to which you are applying.
Mission Statement
The Commonweal Foundation supports educational programs and projects assisting disadvantaged youth. The Foundation focuses on secondary and, to a lesser extent, elementary education.
Program Guidelines
The following guidelines help direct the Foundation's funding decisions within the Community Assistance Grants Program:
- The Foundation will only consider requests that address the education needs of disadvantaged children and youth (ages 6-18). We are particularly interested in helping organizations that implement strategies that foster partnership building.
- We consider requests for General Operating and Project specific support.
- Programs should be located in Washington , DC , Maryland or Northern Virginia.
- The organization's Annual Operating Budget should not exceed $1,000,000. Please refer to Line 17 of your most recent IRS Form 990.
- All programs must have a 501(c )(3) private/public non-profit tax-exempt status with the IRS.
- The maximum grant award under this program is $25,000.
- Organizations may submit a proposal for only one deadline within a 12-month period.
- Organizations that have received recent funding for 3 consecutive years must skip a year before re-applying. For example, if you received funding in September 2006, 2005 and 2004, you are not eligible to apply until September of 2008.
- Although we would like to respond affirmatively to all requests coming to the Foundation, we receive far more than can possibly be funded. Therefore, we find it necessary to establish priorities and guidelines for the use of our relatively limited resources, Therefore,
THE FOUNDATION DOES NOT CONSIDER GRANTS FOR:
- Individuals for scholarship, research or travel
- Capital Campaigns
- Endowments
- Special Events or Tables for special events
- Political organizations or lobbying activities
- Local organizations that raise funds to send overseas
- Multi-year grants
